A VERY SPECIAL VISIT (Uma visita muito especial)

This happened on March 26, 1999. The setting was the Scuola Superiore di Lingue Moderne per Interpreti e Traduttori of the University of Trieste - Trieste - Italy. (Aconteceu em 26 de março de 1999. O cenário foi a Escola Superior de Línguas Modernas para Intérpretes e Tradutores da Universidade de Trieste - Trieste - Itália.)
I was kindly invited by Professors Giuliana Ardito and Enrico Varesco to participate in a mock-conference "Environmental Protection in Brazil", as an exercise with conference interpreting students (Portuguese and Dutch languages) at the University of Trieste. (Fui gentilmente convidado pelos Professores Giuliana Ardito e Enrico Varesco a participar de uma conferência simulada "Proteção Ambiental no Brasil", a título de exercício com os estudantes de interpretação simultânea (nos idiomas português e holandês) da Universidade de Trieste.)

Elizabeth Koenraads (she also delivered a presentation, speaking in
Dutch) can also be seen - the interpreter beside me is helping me
understand the questions from the audience, while my speech was
simultaneously interpreted into Italian and Dutch.

The following students of Dutch interpreting were present among the participants: Irene, Carolina, Paola Manca, Claudio Bisceglia, Samantha Roncalli and Elisabetta Travaglia. The conference was organized in the following way (A conferência foi organizada da seguinte maneira):
a) Presentation by Ayrton Farias in Brazilian Portuguese interpreted from Portuguese into Italian by the students;
a) Apresentação de Ayrton Farias em português do Brasil com interpretação português > italiano pelos estudantes;
b) Presentation by Prof. Elizabeth Koenraads in Dutch interpreted from Dutch into Italian by the students;
b) Apresentação da professora Elizabeth Koenraads em holandês com interpretação holandês > italiano pelos estudantes;
c) Presentation by Serena in Italian interpreted from Italian into Dutch by the students;
c) Apresentação de Serena em italiano com interpretação italiano > holandês pelos estudantes;
d) Presentation in Italian interpreted from Italian into Brazilian Portuguese (by myself), and from Italian into Dutch by the students.

My visit to Trieste actually represented an important landmark in my life as a conference interpreter. Throughout my stay, I felt like being among great old friends and colleagues, although that was my first time visiting them. This is a dream I had always had - visiting one the most advanced conference interpreting schools in the world. I want to express a special acknowledgement to Professor Giuliana Ardito - who's indeed a very special and competent person and colleague, and to Professor Enrico Varesco, whose students of Portuguese interpretation did an excellent job, which means Prof. Enrico has also done an excellent job. (I was amazed when he told me he was Italian - he speaks Portuguese so well, I thought he was from Portugal.) Both of them were the organizers of this initiative that took place in the very charming and beautiful Italian city of Trieste. Thank you from the depth of my heart. I hope to see you again very soon.
A minha visita a Trieste representou um importante marco na minha vida como intérprete de conferências. Em todos os momentos me senti entre velhos e grandes amigos e colegas, embora fosse a primeira vez que os visitava. Este é um sonho que sempre tive - visitar uma das mais avançadas escolas de interpretação do mundo. Desejo expressar um agradecimento especial à Professora Giuliana Ardito - que é de fato uma pessoa e colega muito especial e competente - e ao Professor Enrico Varesco, cujos estudantes de interpretação de português fizeram um excelente trabalho, o que significa que o Prof. Enrico também tem feito um ótimo trabalho. (Fiquei surpreso quando ele me disse que era italiano - ele fala português tão bem que eu pensei que ele fosse de Portugal.) Ambos foram os organizadores dessa iniciativa que ocorreu na bela e charmosa cidade italiana de Trieste. Obrigado de coração. Espero revê-los muito em breve.
